Living the Life Jesus Promised
John 10:10
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
John 10:10 (NIV)
Introduction
Life can sometimes feel like a series of responsibilities.
As fathers, we work hard to provide for our families. We manage schedules, pay bills, solve problems, and carry the weight of many responsibilities.
In the middle of these daily demands, it is easy to find ourselves merely going through the motions.
We wake up.
We work.
We come home.
We repeat the cycle.
Before long, we may begin to wonder:
"Is this the full life Jesus talked about?"
The truth is that many fathers are busy, exhausted, and distracted. While we may be physically present, our hearts can become burdened by stress, worry, and pressure.
Yet Jesus offers something greater.
He offers abundant life.
Not just existence.
Not just survival.
But a life filled with purpose, peace, hope, and joy.
Understanding the Passage
In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd.
He contrasts His mission with that of the thief.
The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
Jesus comes to give life.
The enemy wants to steal our peace.
He wants to destroy our relationships.
He wants to rob us of joy, purpose, and faith.
Jesus, however, came to restore what sin has damaged.
His desire is not merely for us to make it through life.
His desire is for us to experience the fullness of life found in Him.
This abundant life is not measured by wealth, success, or comfort.
It is measured by a relationship with Christ.
A Fatherhood Lesson
There was a season when I realized I was doing all the right things but missing something important.
I was working hard.
Taking care of responsibilities.
Doing my best to provide for my family.
Yet deep inside, I felt tired.
Not physically.
Spiritually.
I had become so focused on being productive that I had forgotten how to simply enjoy God's presence.
I was trying to build a good life for my family while neglecting the One who gives life itself.
One morning during my quiet time, John 10:10 stood out to me.
Jesus did not say He came so we could be busy.
He did not say He came so we could be successful.
He said He came so we could have life to the full.
That verse challenged me.
Was I merely existing?
Or was I truly living the life Jesus offered?
God reminded me that abundant life begins with Him.
Not with accomplishments.
Not with possessions.
Not with a perfect schedule.
But with His presence.
What the Thief Tries to Steal
Many fathers experience attacks that are not always obvious.
He Tries to Steal Our Peace
Worry about finances.
Concern for our children.
Anxiety about the future.
The enemy loves to keep our minds focused on fear.
He Tries to Steal Our Joy
Life's pressures can slowly drain the joy from our hearts.
We stop enjoying the blessings God has already given us.
We become consumed with what is next instead of appreciating what is now.
He Tries to Steal Our Relationships
Distractions pull us away from the people we love most.
Phones.
Work.
Stress.
Busyness.
Without realizing it, we become disconnected from our spouse, our children, and even God.
What Abundant Life Looks Like
Abundant life does not mean a problem-free life.
It means a Christ-filled life.
It means:
•Having peace even when circumstances are uncertain.
•Finding joy in ordinary moments.
•Being present with your family.
•Trusting God with the future.
•Living with purpose every day.
•Walking closely with Jesus.
The father's heart was never designed to be filled by success alone.
It was designed to be filled by God.
What This Means for Fathers
Our children watch how we live.
They notice whether we are constantly stressed or deeply rooted in faith.
They observe whether our joy comes from achievements or from God.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is not a perfect life.
It is showing them what it means to live an abundant life with Christ.
When our children see us praying, trusting, serving, and rejoicing in God's goodness, they learn where true life is found.
The greatest legacy we can leave them is not wealth.
It is a relationship with Jesus.
Final Thoughts
Jesus never promised an easy life.
But He did promise a full life.
A life filled with His presence.
A life anchored in His peace.
A life overflowing with His grace.
If you have been merely surviving lately, take a moment today to return to the Good Shepherd.
Slow down.
Spend time with Him.
Refocus your heart.
Remember that abundant life is not found in doing more.
It is found in knowing Him more.
Because the life Jesus offers is greater than anything this world can provide.
And it is available to you today.
A Prayer for Fathers
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who came to give us life to the full. Forgive us for the times we become consumed by busyness, worry, and responsibilities while neglecting our relationship with You.
Help us to live with purpose, joy, and peace. Protect our hearts from the distractions that try to steal our attention from what truly matters.
Teach us to lead our families by example and to show our children that true life is found in Christ alone.
May our homes be filled with Your presence, Your love, and Your peace.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
