Feedback with Wisdom: A Father's Reflection (Proverbs 9:7-12)

Handling Feedback with Wisdom: A Father's Reflection

Proverbs 9:7-12

"Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning."

Proverbs 9:9

Introduction

No one enjoys being criticized.

Whether it comes from a spouse, a child, a friend, a colleague, or even a fellow believer, criticism can feel uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

Our natural reaction is often to defend ourselves, explain our actions, or justify our decisions.

As fathers, this can be especially challenging.

We work hard to provide for our families, make countless decisions every day, and carry responsibilities that often go unnoticed. When someone points out a mistake or offers correction, it can feel like a personal attack.

Yet Proverbs 9 teaches us a valuable lesson:

Wise people welcome correction because they understand that growth often comes through feedback.

A Lesson Every Father Needs

One of the clearest differences between wisdom and foolishness is how a person responds to correction.

Proverbs tells us that a mocker rejects correction and becomes resentful.

A wise person, however, receives instruction and grows from it.

That is not easy.

In fact, it may be one of the hardest lessons for fathers to learn.

Pride often whispers:

•"I already know that."

•"They don't understand."

•"I'm right."

•"I don't need anyone's advice."

But wisdom says:

•"What can I learn from this?"

•"Is there truth in what they're saying?"

•"How can I grow from this experience?"

The wise father is not the one who never makes mistakes.

The wise father is the one who learns from them.

A Fatherhood Moment I Will Never Forget

I remember a time when one of my children told me something that caught me completely off guard.

We had been talking about a situation at home when my child quietly said,

"Dad, sometimes you listen just to reply, not to understand."

Those words stung.

My first reaction was to defend myself.

After all, I was trying my best.

I cared deeply about my family.

I had good intentions.

But as I reflected on the comment, I realized there was truth in it.

There had been times when I was so focused on solving problems that I wasn't fully listening.

I wanted to provide answers before understanding the heart behind the words.

That simple piece of feedback became an opportunity for growth.

It reminded me that even as fathers, we are still learning.

Our children may be younger than us, but sometimes God uses them to teach us valuable lessons.

Had I dismissed the comment, I would have missed an opportunity to become a better father.

Feedback Is a Gift

Constructive feedback is often one of God's tools for shaping our character.

It reveals blind spots.

It helps us improve.

It keeps us humble.

The people who grow the most are usually those who are willing to receive guidance.

Think about athletes, musicians, teachers, or leaders.

None of them improve without coaching and feedback.

The same is true in fatherhood.

We grow when we are willing to listen, learn, and adjust.

That doesn't mean every criticism is accurate.

But even when feedback is delivered imperfectly, there may still be something valuable to learn.

Wisdom seeks the lesson instead of focusing only on the discomfort.

The Role of Humility

Humility is the foundation of teachability.

A proud heart resists correction.

A humble heart welcomes it.

Jesus demonstrated perfect humility throughout His earthly ministry.

Even though He was perfect, He listened, showed patience, and responded with grace.

As fathers, humility allows us to say:

•"I was wrong."

•"Thank you for telling me."

•"I need to work on that."

•"Will you forgive me?"

These simple phrases can strengthen relationships and build trust within our families.

Children learn a powerful lesson when they see a father who is willing to grow.

Teaching Our Children to Receive Feedback

One of the greatest examples we can give our children is showing them how to handle correction well.

When they see us become defensive, they learn defensiveness.

When they see us respond with humility, they learn humility.

When they see us welcome instruction, they learn the value of lifelong growth.

Our response to feedback today may shape how our children respond to correction tomorrow.

A teachable father often raises teachable children.

Growing in Wisdom

Proverbs 9:10 reminds us:

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

True wisdom begins with God.

The closer we walk with Him, the more willing we become to learn.

God often uses Scripture, circumstances, and even the people around us to shape our hearts.

The question is not whether we will receive feedback.

The question is whether we will respond with wisdom.

Will we resist it?

Or will we allow God to use it for our growth?

Final Thoughts

Fatherhood is a journey of continual learning.

None of us have arrived.

None of us are perfect.

And none of us are beyond growth.

The next time someone offers correction or feedback, pause before responding.

Pray for wisdom.

Look for the lesson.

Ask God what He wants to teach you.

Because every piece of constructive feedback is an opportunity to become a better father, a better leader, and a better follower of Christ.

Wise fathers are not those who know everything.

Wise fathers are those who never stop learning.

A Prayer for Fathers

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your wisdom and patience with us.

Help us to have humble hearts that are willing to receive correction and learn from others. Protect us from pride and defensiveness, and teach us to seek growth rather than self-justification.

Give us the wisdom to recognize truth when it is spoken and the courage to make changes when needed.

Help us to model humility for our children and show them what it means to be teachable followers of Christ.

May we continue growing in wisdom, grace, and understanding so that we can lead our families well.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
