When We Can't See the Whole Picture
Romans 8:28
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Introduction
As fathers, we want life to make sense.
We want our plans to succeed.
We want our children to avoid pain.
We want our families to experience security and stability.
But life doesn't always unfold the way we expect.
Sometimes prayers go unanswered.
Sometimes doors close unexpectedly.
Sometimes we face disappointments we never saw coming.
In those moments, it can be difficult to understand what God is doing.
Yet Romans 8:28 offers a comforting reminder:
God is always working, even when we cannot see it.
God Works in All Things
Notice what Paul says.
He does not say all things are good.
He says God works through all things for good.
There is a difference.
Disappointments are not good.
Heartbreak is not good.
Failure is not good.
Pain is not good.
Yet God is so powerful and so loving that He can take even our most difficult moments and use them for His purposes.
What appears to be a setback today may become a blessing tomorrow.
What feels like a delay may actually be God's preparation.
What seems like a closed door may be God's protection.
A Father's Reflection
Looking back, I can see seasons where I questioned God's plan.
There were situations I desperately wanted to change.
Opportunities that didn't work out.
Prayers that seemed to go unanswered.
At the time, I couldn't understand why.
But years later, I saw God's hand in those very circumstances.
What I once viewed as disappointment became redirection.
What I saw as loss became growth.
What felt like uncertainty became an opportunity to trust God more deeply.
God was working all along.
Even when I couldn't see it.
Trusting the Master Builder
When a builder constructs a house, the work often looks messy before it looks beautiful.
There are unfinished rooms, scattered tools, and construction materials everywhere.
If you walked through halfway, you might think something was wrong.
But the builder sees the finished picture.
God sees our lives the same way.
We see today's challenges.
God sees the completed masterpiece.
We focus on the chapter we're living.
God sees the entire story.
What This Means for Fathers
Our children watch how we respond to life's disappointments.
When things don't go according to plan, do they see fear or faith?
Despair or hope?
Panic or trust?
As fathers, we have the opportunity to show our children what it means to trust God's heart even when we don't understand His ways.
Faith doesn't require having all the answers.
Faith trusts the One who does.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps you're facing a situation today that doesn't make sense.
A concern about your child.
A financial burden.
A health challenge.
A disappointment you didn't expect.
Remember this:
God is still working.
Even when you don't see it.
Even when you don't understand it.
Even when the outcome hasn't arrived yet.
The God who holds your future is faithfully working behind the scenes.
And one day, you may look back and discover that He was doing far more than you ever realized.
A Prayer for Fathers
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are always working, even when we cannot see it.
Help us trust You during seasons of uncertainty and disappointment.
Remind us that Your plans are greater than our understanding and Your purposes are always good.
Give us faith to trust You with our families, our future, and every challenge we face.
May our children see in us a father who walks by faith and not by sight.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
