How to put God first—and why it changes everything
You're busy. You're stretched. You're trying to be a good father, a good husband, a good provider. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, your relationship with God has slipped to the back burner.
You read your Bible occasionally. You pray when you remember. You go to church on Sundays. But you're not seeking God first. You're seeking Him last—after everything else is done.
Here's what I've learned: When you seek God first, everything else falls into place. When you don't, everything else falls apart.
Let's explore what it means to be the father who seeks God first.
📖 What the Bible Says
Seek First the Kingdom
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
— Matthew 6:33
This is one of the most important verses for fathers. Jesus doesn't say, "Seek first your career." He doesn't say, "Seek first your family." He says, "Seek first His kingdom." When you put God first, everything else—your marriage, your parenting, your provision—falls into place.
What this means: God isn't asking to be a part of your life. He's asking to be first.
Love God with All Your Heart
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."
— Matthew 22:37
This is the greatest commandment. Before you can love your wife well, before you can lead your children well, you must love God first.
What this means: Your relationship with God is the foundation of everything else.
God Rewards Those Who Seek Him
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
— Hebrews 11:6
God promises to reward those who seek Him. Not with wealth or success—but with Himself. He is the reward.
What this means: Seeking God isn't a duty—it's a pursuit of the greatest treasure.
When You Seek God, You Find Him
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
— Jeremiah 29:13
God promises that when we seek Him wholeheartedly, we will find Him. He's not hiding. He's waiting to be found.
What this means: God wants to be found. He wants relationship with you.
Apart from God, We Can Do Nothing
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
— John 15:5
Without God, you can't be the father you want to be. You can't love your wife the way she needs to be loved. You can't lead your children the way they need to be led.
What this means: Apart from God, you're cutting yourself off from the source of everything you need.
🏠 What This Means for Fathers
God First Isn't a Priority—It's the Priority
You've heard the saying: "God first, family second, ministry third." That's the right order. But it's easy to say and hard to live.
What this looks like:
· Time with God before time with the world
· Prayer before planning
· Scripture before strategy
· Seeking God's will before making decisions
Seeking God First Changes Your Fathering
When you seek God first, you father differently. You're more patient. More loving. More present. More wise.
Why? Because you're drawing from a source that's bigger than yourself. You're not fathering from your own strength—you're fathering from His.
Your Children Learn to Seek God by Watching You
When your children see you seek God first—praying, reading Scripture, worshiping, trusting—they learn that God is real. They learn that He's worth seeking.
You are modeling faith for the next generation.
Seeking God First Doesn't Mean Neglecting Your Family
Some men use "God first" as an excuse to neglect their families. That's not what this means. God doesn't want you to abandon your family to seek Him. He wants you to seek Him in your family life.
Seeking God first means prioritizing Him—not abandoning everything else.
The Order Matters
God first.
Family second.
Ministry third.
When you get the order right, everything else falls into place. When you get it wrong, everything else suffers.
The order matters.
💡 How a Father Can Seek God First
1. Start Your Day with God
Before you check your phone, before you start your to-do list, before the kids wake up—spend time with God.
What to do:
· Wake up 15 minutes earlier
· Read one chapter of Scripture
· Pray through your day
· Surrender your plans to God
Script:
"Lord, before anything else today, I want to be with You. Speak to me. Lead me. I'm Yours."
2. Prioritize Prayer
Prayer isn't a last resort—it's your first response. Pray throughout the day. Pray in the car. Pray at work. Pray with your family.
What to do:
· Set a daily prayer time
· Pray before decisions
· Pray with your wife
· Pray with your children
Script:
"Lord, I don't want to make a move without You. Guide me. Lead me. Give me wisdom."
3. Immerse Yourself in Scripture
You can't seek God if you don't know His Word. Read it. Study it. Memorize it. Apply it.
What to do:
· Read daily
· Meditate on one verse
· Write down what God is teaching you
· Apply it to your life
Script:
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105)
4. Make God the Center of Your Home
Seeking God first isn't just a personal discipline—it's a family priority. Make God the center of your home.
What to do:
· Lead family devotions
· Pray before meals
· Worship together
· Talk about God in everyday moments
Script:
"As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)
5. Seek God's Will Before Making Decisions
Before you decide, seek God. Before you act, pray. Before you commit, ask for His guidance.
What to do:
· Pray before big decisions
· Seek wise counsel
· Check your motives
· Wait for peace
Script:
"Lord, I need Your wisdom. I don't want to make this decision without You."
6. Fast When You Need to Hear from God
Sometimes you need to quiet the noise and focus on God. Fasting is a way to do that.
What to do:
· Skip a meal and pray
· Fast from social media for a day
· Spend extended time in prayer
· Seek God's direction
Script:
"Lord, I'm setting aside this distraction to seek You. Speak to me."
7. Trust God with the Results
Seeking God first doesn't guarantee everything will go your way. It guarantees that you'll be aligned with His way.
What to do:
· Trust God's timing
· Trust God's plan
· Trust God's goodness
· Rest in His sovereignty
Script:
"Lord, I trust You. Not because I understand everything—but because I know You."
8. Model Seeking God for Your Children
Let your children see you seek God. Let them see you pray. Let them see you read Scripture. Let them see you worship.
What to do:
· Pray in front of your children
· Read Scripture in front of your children
· Talk about what God is teaching you
· Share answered prayers
Script:
"Children, I want you to see that I seek God. Not because I'm perfect—but because I need Him."
🙏 A Prayer for the Father Who Seeks God First
"Lord, I want to seek You first. Not second. Not third. Not last. But first. Before my work. Before my plans. Before my worries. I want You to be the priority. Help me to start my day with You. Help me to prioritize prayer. Help me to immerse myself in Your Word. Help me to make You the center of my home. Help me to seek Your will before I make decisions. Help me to trust You with the results. And help me to model seeking You for my children. I want You first—in everything. In Jesus' name, amen."
